Graham Hill, one of the world's most famous racing drivers, had an explosive temper, stubbornness and indiscretion, but also warmth, courage and generosity. He was a complex man who revelled in the exotic, dangerous and sometimes bizarre world of international motor racing. His attitude to women, his fear of death, his fierce determination and his fate on the track are all explored by Tony Rudlin, Graham's friend for the last seven years of his life, in these intriguing memoirs, which reveal a side of Graham Hill rarely seen by the public.

GRAHAM Hill’s career was one of the most remarkable in modern motorsport, spanning a turbulent 20 years in the sport’s history. At his peak in the mid-1960s, he was at the forefront of Grand Prix and sports car racing, competing against the very best drivers of the day: Clark, Surtees, Gurney, Brabham, Rindt and Stewart.

John Tipler’s new biography of this determined and popular man looks back at the great victories of his long, varied career – his two Formula One World Championships, 14 Grand Prix victories and triumphs at the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. But it also explores Hill’s background and character, showing how his courage and determination earned him a prominent position as one of the finest all-round drivers and most exceptional racing drivers of his time. He also sees Hill's later transition from driver to team owner as a new phase in a tireless career that was so cruelly cut short when he and key members of his team were killed in a plane crash in 1975.

Hill made his name internationally as a driver for Lotus and BRM in the late 1950s and early 1960s. For the next decade, he was, along with Jim Clark and John Surtees, one of the leading British drivers in Grand Prix racing. Hill's rivalry with Clark, particularly during the 1962 season when Hill had just won the World Championship, is perhaps the defining moment of the era.

John Tipler's portrait of this charismatic man provides a keen insight into his character and rare talent as a driver. The book includes vivid reminiscences from many of Hill's contemporaries, including Sir Jackie Stewart. Hill's contribution to the popularity and development of the sport is covered in detail and the book paints a picture of the atmosphere and ethos of elite sport over 40 years ago.
